Lake D’Arbonne Crowns “King of Kings” Champions
D’Arbonne Pointe, Farmerville Louisiana
“Better to have had one KING than have 500”, Quote from King Charles II.
As I was searching through many quotes referencing Kings, I found this above quote from King Charles II most fitting. However, here on Lake D’Arbonne we like to think about things just a bit differently than ole’ Charles!
We decided to Crown (2) Kings and give them each 500…. $500 Dollars in Cash that is! In addition, in place of a Crown, this might look a little silly for our newly crowned Kings to be seen all over Union Parish and Lake D’Arbonne wearing an actual crown. We decided to replace this crown with a trophy for each worthy of any King! We didn’t stop there! We also gave away (2) Cash Prizes of $500.00 each!
Now for a little back story and for the part everyone has been waiting for….The details!
Our “King of Kings” tournament has to be one of the most advertised local fishing tournaments to hit the waters of Lake D’Arbonne, especially in recent years! This is due to a huge influence geared toward promotion of Lake D’Arbonne and Union Parish in many ways. I am especially honored to be among those members responsible for this movement, and as founder and president of the Bayou State Crappie Association, I will assure you that we will continue our support any efforts during this endeavor!
“King of Kings” will be an Annual event each year! Chamber of Commerce President Lum Farr introduced this idea during the spring of 2014, following our completion of filming (3) successful Krappie Kings TV episodes here on Lake D’Arbonne. You might note the relation of the term Kings here. Union Parish Chamber of Commerce, Lum Farr, Peyton McKinnie and Brandon Jennings President of the Bayou State Crappie Association teamed together to organize and promote this event.
What is an event of Kings without “all the Kings’ men”! Indeed we had our “warriors” involved as well! I am speaking of the Louisiana Hunters for Heroes, warrior transition unit. The Bayou State Crappie Association was contacted by Donnie Vocker from La Hunters for Heroes asking for assistance in taking a group of Disabled Veterans on a crappie fishing adventure. We coordinated this event to work in conjunction with our “King of Kings” event and it proved to be very rewarding and successful. A group of (10) Veterans were hosted through volunteers from each participating organization. In addition we enjoyed the camaraderie and great food! This in itself is another great story and I will provide you that opportunity on my next writing adventure. For now let’s get back to the details!
We are excited to announce that our “Fishing with Veterans” event will become an annual event! La Hunters for Heroes has asked that we continue this great event. We are not certain at this time if both events will continue to coincide, but that is always an option. I truly enjoyed the time I spent with this great group of Heroes and Volunteers!
Now let’s set the mood for this event. WET, COLD & WINDY! Very conducive fishing conditions right? WRONG! Our weather pattern in Louisiana leaves little to be desired at times and this was true once again! However, of the (103) tickets sold to the event, a majority of our participants showed their tolerance levels and they also showed how productive Lake D’Arbonne can be…even under grueling circumstance!
So who are these Kings? We now have two members of the “Royal Family of Fishing”, one representing Crappie and the other representing Bass!
Our scales opened for early weigh in at 10am during this event. At 10:04 am on Saturday March 21st 2015, little did I know that we were weighing the winning crappie for this event! This is the first time I had met Andy Taylor accompanied by his dad. Andy had a huge smile on his face and we soon realized the reason. Andy was fishing from the bank of a local known hot spot during this time of year, what Andy did not realize was the significance of his catch. Urged by his dad, they soon arrived at early weigh-in and Andy’s Slab produced a recorded weight of (2.0 lbs) on the money! Throughout the event, many crappie were weighed in hopes of bumping Andy from his throne, many were close but at the end of the day Andy was still KING! What I will remember most about this event is the look on Andy’s face when he arrived, and throughout the day and during the final weigh-in. Andy would glance over and I would catch his eye and re-assure him that he was still in position to claim the title “King of D’Arbonne”, and his smile would grow a bit larger! This great picture included shows the Father/Son moment that will forever be a part of Andy’s memories!
Already know as a Bass fishing Legend on lake D’Arbonne, Monk Anderson now holds the true title as “King of D’Arbonne” representing the Bass Division! Monk and long time fishing partner “Poochie”Young arrived at the official weigh-in with a “Full Bag”! Monk’s shallow water catch produced a winning weigh of 6.84 lbs! This was my first encounter with this “veteran bass fishing duo” and I am sure it won’t be my last. My lasting memories of Monk on this day will be Monk and Poochie’s departure from the event as they carried away the (5 foot) Trophy in their boat!
I would like to extend my personal appreciation and a great big “THANK YOU” to Union Parish Chamber of Commerce, Lum Farr, Peyton McKinnie, Donnie Vocker and the LA Hunters for Heroes, all Volunteers, Host Guides, Event Organizers, ticket purchasers, Kinny Haddox @ lakedarbonnelife.com and especially to my BSCA Team members. Also, Clif Fuqua and Jonathan Ransbottom from our Central Division of the BSCA were my backbone at King of Kings Head Quarters during tournament day! It takes a complete group effort! As a last note: We were excited to find out there were fishermen on the lake from Illinois, Deleware, and Tennessee for the tournament. How about that for a first time outing.
